Here is how the
mixx.com homepage looks to me.
The "Submit a Link" button has recently been moved to the top right corner, has an eye-catching color, and is visible from any page. This is good.
The "Your Mixx Friends' Recent Activity" is given a neutral color and anonymity amongst the other buttons. This is bad.
IMHO, to correct the situation, move the 'Your Mixx Friends Recent Activity' to an equally prominent spot in the header, either right next to the 'Submit a Link' button, or symmetrically placed on the (other) side of the header.
Give the buttons more "zen" type names, to train new (and old ) users how to better participate...
a brainstorm yields:
get/ give
inbox/outbox
in/out
pull/push
inhale/exhale
...basically anything that strongly suggests a duality; allow members to change the names of the buttons to suit themselves...
To really get the point across, the buttons could look like these; (but functional). The symbol could be split and have each side link to either the "submit" or "friends activity", and allowed to be set to "submissions", "voted for", "comments", or "all"
